Communion

Lets talk communion. Communion is a ritual or practice we partake in to remember how Jesus died on the cross for our sin. When talking to your kids about communion, always trust your parent gut to know when their ready to understand and partake in communion.

What is Communion

Matthew 26:26-30 & 1 Corinthians 11: 24-26

Communion is a time when those who believe in Him take a moment to remember what Jesus did for them and us on the cross. We remember the sacrifice Jesus made for our sin when He died on the cross. Right before Jesus died He celebrated the Passover with His disciples and during that meal Jesus took the bread and the cup and told the disciples about the new covenant.

Jesus told the disciples that the bread was a symbol for His body. Jesus was killed on the cross to pay the price for our sins. The bread is a symbol that we use to remember how Jesus sacrificed His body and life for us (Matthew 26:26). Jesus told the disciples that the cup or juice was a symbol for His blood that He shed on the cross for us. The cup is a symbol that we use to remember the wrath that Jesus faced for our sin (Matthew 26:27-28). We remember both of these because our sins were washed away because of Jesus sacrifice of His body to pay the ultimate price for our sin.

Jesus tells us to remember Him and we do this by participating in communion. He also calls us to remember Him often until the day He returns and thats why we participate in communion many times throughout the year.

Tips for When Talking Through Communion

  • Read: Matthew 26: 26-28

  • Read: 1 Corinthians 11: 24-26

  • Explain that the wine and bread are symbols (younger elementary children have not developed abstract thinking yet so it might be hard for them to understand that the bread and wine are not actually the physical flesh and blood of Christ).

  • Share that Christ told us to keep remembering Him through communion until He returned again. So, this is something that we partake in often.

  • Walk them through saying a prayer of thankfulness to Christ right before taking the bread and wine (juice).
