Baptism

Lets talk baptism. Baptism is a public declaration of one’s faith in Jesus. When talking to your kids about baptism you always need to trust your parent gut to know if their ready to take this step. There is no exact age for a child to be baptized, however they must have accepted Jesus into their hearts, before being baptized. When talking with your child here are a few good questions to have them answer to know if their ready to be baptized:

  1. What does it mean to believe in Jesus and have you made that commitment?

  2. What is baptism?

  3. Why do you want to be baptized?

They may not have the answers yet and that’s ok. Continue to have conversations with your child about their faith and about baptism. Also ask your child to pray (pray with them too) asking God to help them answer these questions. When they are able to answer them in their own words and with clarity their probably ready to be baptized and understand the choice they're making and why they are making it. Parents, do not push your child to get baptized, when their ready they will tell you. Waiting till their ready makes it more meaningful to them and creates a long lasting impact. If you push baptism, it just becomes something their parents made them do and deep down it meant nothing.

How to Explain Baptism

Baptism is a symbol of our faith in Jesus. Baptism is the opportunity to share with others that you believe in Jesus. Baptism is a symbol that one believes in Jesus as their Lord and Savior and that they have chosen to follow Him. Baptism does not make you a follower of Jesus, it’s your faith in Jesus that saves you. When one decides to get baptized it is because they have put their trust in Jesus. Baptism is for anyone who has put their trust in Jesus and is for anyone who can share their story or testimony of Him.

Bible Reading and Discussion

Read Acts 16:25-34

The jailer confessed his belief in Jesus and was saved. After confessing that he believed in Jesus, the jailer was baptized. Did you notice the order? He became a Christian and then he was baptized. The decision to ask Jesus into his life was a very important one. Being baptized did not make the jailer a Christian, but it showed others that he had become a Christian.
